about

More sophisticated instruments were employed in the later creation of the track ‘La Biblioteca de Fantasma’. This song was written by an Imperial archivist decades after the revolution began, when hidden letters were discovered long after the uprising. The archivist decided that these long-forgotten letters deserved a response in his song.

The authenticity of these letters is heavily disputed.

This song makes heavy use of diminished harmony – a staple element of Onculiey folk music which has been preserved when restoring their older recordings for modern audiences.

lyrics

Dear shoe shiner
I’ve read your latest letter
And I’m sure I’ll read it again
When I think of you
And need a reminder
Of the lessons of your life
I was saddened to hear of your sentence
And how brutal it is
You just wanted a better life
Yet you’ll be pressed up against the wall
Dear grave digger
I’ve read your polemic
Your criticisms are harsh but fair
Though sometimes hard to translate
I worry that most will not see it the way you do
Uniformed men
Might knock on your door
Oh how frightening that would be
I’m sure you know the risks already
I wish you luck in your endeavors
I’m certain many will find your writings inspiring
I just hope it’s worth it
Dear prime minister
I read a transcript of your speech
I write to implore you
Stop the violence
Certainly they have done wrong
But prison is a fair enough punishment
They need not die for it
Think practically
Who will clean the gutters when they’re gone
Our country will collapse
They simply need to be reminded of their place
Nothing more
I write to all of you
To find a solution
To stop the revolution
To save their little nation
To save myself
I know it’s impossible
Because I’m too late
I wasn’t there when this happened
A lifetime ago
A lifetime ago
A lifetime ago
A lifetime ago
A lifetime ago
